About DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course:

Diploma in Nautical Science course is designed for those students who wants to build their career as a Deck Officer. It is a diploma course of one year duration which leads to three years B.Sc. Nautical Science course. This course deals with the machinations and workings of vessels and naval ships. 

Over the recent years there is an immense growth in Shipping industry globally and demand for seafarers is high. The objective of DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course is to produce future Deck officers.

Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has approved pre-sea training one year Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) course affiliated to Indian Maritime University (IMU). After successful completion of the DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course, cadets are awarded with certificate of pre-sea completion and eligible to join as a deck cadet on ship.

The pre-sea course comprises of two semesters of six months duration each. After the course, cadets have to undergo SSTP (Structured Shipboard Training Programme) which comprises on-board training of eighteen months consists three semesters (IMU Semester III, IV & V Exams) of six months duration each. While on-board training a cadet gets free lodging, boarding and stipend.

Then after the cadets are required to attend post-sea shore-based training (Semester VI) of four months duration which is the preparatory course for the ‘Second Mates’ exam organized by the DGS (Director General of Shipping) at approved institutes.

The cadet also required to finish the mandatory STCW courses (GMDSS, ROC/ARPA, PSCRB, MFA, AFF, and ECDIS) for their ‘Second Mates’ (FG) license which may takes two months.

After STCW courses and Second Mates examination a cadet is awarded with F.G Certificate of Competency to join as a third officer on any sea going vessel. by D.G. Shipping, Govt. of India.

Eligibility Criteria for DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course:

The eligibility conditions required to enrol in DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course are as follows.

Students must have completed class 10+2 with science stream (PCM) from CBSE/ICSE or any other recognised board with minimum 70 % aggregate marks are eligible to apply.

Or

Students who have completed B.Sc. in Electronics (with Physics), Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, with minimum 60% marks from a recognized university are eligible to apply.

Or

Students who have completed B. Tech course with minimum 60% marks from a university recognized by UGC are eligible to apply. 

Students must be physically fit with no colour blindness and having 6/6 eyesight without visual aids and no night blindness.

In order to pursue DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) course, applicants must have a sponsorship from a shipping company.

Students enrolling into Marine Programmes must have Passports.
