The RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the United States, the Pavlov Institute in Russia, the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, the Institute National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) in France, and others collaborate with the NBRC. In 2006, the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) of McGill University in Canada and the NBRC were established as sister institutes.

On December 16, 2003, the then-President of India, Dr. APJ Kalam, formally dedicated the Manesar Institute to the nation. The NBRC is India's only institute dedicated to neuroscience research and education.
