The National Dairy Research Institute evolved from the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry & Dairying, which was founded in Bangalore in 1923. With over 93 years of existence, this Institute has reached its current distinguished status as a national institute for forwarding the cause of dairying via research and teaching that caters to India's and other developing nations' human resource needs in Asia and Africa.

The Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying was founded in 1923 as a Dairy Training and Research Centre on the grounds of the Military Dairy Farm in Bangalore by the Government of India. Later, the Government of India decided to build the National Dairy Research Institute and a Dairy Science College at Karnal on the grounds of the Cattle-cum-Dairy farm (old Karnal farm), which was then directly controlled by the Union Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

National Dairy Research Institute Karnal Admission process 2024

National Dairy Research Institute Karnal admissions are available at the diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate levels. The institute offers courses such as Diploma in Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Diploma in Dairy Technology, B.Tech Dairy Technology, M.Tech Dairy Engineering, and M.Sc Dairy Chemistry. NDRI Karnal admits students to its diploma programmes based on their performance in the institute's entrance test. National Dairy Research Institute Karnal Scholarship & Results

Scholarships:

Scholarships will be provided to students based on merit by the Government of India/ICAR/Alumni Association/Dairy Industry, among others. This provision will be used to help as many students as possible who have a solid academic record and are working hard to pursue higher education.

The award will be awarded by the Institute's Joint Director on the proposal of the Standing Committee, who will examine each student's merit.

First-year students will be awarded scholarships based on their merit in the Entrance Examination, while second, third, and fourth-year students will be awarded scholarships based on their merit in the previous year's examinations.

If students achieve similar marks/SGPA/CGPA, their prior year's results will be used to determine their inter-se-merit for the purpose. However, in the case of second-year students, the merit assigned in the entrance examination would be considered.

The Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying was founded in Bangalore in 1923 as the National Dairy Research Institute. In 1947, the institute was renamed the National Dairy Research Institute. The National Dairy Research Institute was relocated to Karnal in 1955. The campus has a total land area of 1348 acres. The University Grants Commission has granted approval to NDRI Karnal. The National Dairy Research Institute Karnal offers 31 courses in total. The institute has a number of national and international relationships, including ICAR/CSIR Institutes, NDDB, World Bank, UNDP, IAEA, and others. 

NDRI employs over 160 highly qualified and experienced scientists and 185 technical personnel, in addition to administrative and support workers, to manage its research and academic programmes, which have an annual budget of more than Rs 215 crores.

The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, has been ranked top in the country by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in the list of agricultural universities for 2020.

The UGC designated the NDRI as a 'Deemed to be University' in 1989. The NDRI has been designated as a Centre of Excellence in Animal Biotechnology. 

The Institute holds the rare distinction of being ranked top among all Agricultural Universities in India, including four Deemed Universities, three years in a row in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19.
